What is zkLink Trying To Solve

ZkLink is a multi-chain Layer 3 rollup infrastructure. It leverages zero-knowledge technology to unify fragmented liquidity and streamline the development and use of DApps across multiple blockchains.

Managing multiple blockchains is a tedious task. Therefore, zkLink simplifies this process by combining the capabilities of zkLink Nova and zkLink X to seamlessly connect different blockchain systems, making transactions smoother and more efficient. This innovative approach addresses liquidity fragmentation by enabling users to easily access and trade assets across multiple chains.

Features of zkLink

ZkLink operates through two main components: zkLink Nova and zkLink X. Together, these components create a powerful ecosystem for multi-chain interoperability.

zkLink Nova

ZkLink Nova is the first-ever aggregated Layer 3 zkEVM Rollup network, built on Ethereum and its Layer 2 rollups (L2s). By utilizing ZK Stack’s zkEVM, zkLink Nova achieves EVM compatibility, allowing developers to easily create and deploy Solidity smart contracts. This platform aggregates scattered assets from various Ethereum Layer 2s, enabling seamless interoperable transactions and enhancing liquidity across the network.

zkLink X

Meanwhile, ZkLink X provides a modular framework for developing custom App-Rollups with their own sovereignty. These rollups can access native tokens across connected Layer-1 (L1) and Layer-2 (L2) blockchains. This setup allows users to trade multi-chain assets through a unified interface, eliminating the need for cross-chain asset bridges and thereby avoiding the associated risks and fees.

How Does zkLink Work?

zkLink employs a sophisticated multilayered architecture, where each layer fulfills a specific role to enhance the system’s efficiency and security:

1. Sequencing Layer

The Sequencing Layer is responsible for receiving user transactions, sequencing them, and grouping them into batches. These batches are then committed to the Settlement Layer. If an external Data Availability (DA) layer is used, the sequencer also sends transaction data to this layer. Initially, zkLink may use a centralized sequencer model but plans to transition to decentralized sequencer solutions to address risks such as single points of failure and potential transaction censorship.

2. Execution Layer

The Execution Layer processes transactions to update the system’s state accurately. It utilizes ZK Stack’s zkEVM to run smart contracts and validate transaction execution through zero-knowledge proofs. This ensures that only valid transactions are processed, leading to correct state machine transitions.

3. Settlement Layer

The Settlement Layer upholds the security and integrity of off-chain transactions. Traditional ZK-rollups often rely on a single chain, like Ethereum, as the settlement layer for verifying proofs and settling transactions. zkLink introduces two solutions for the Settlement Layer: zkLink Nexus and zkLink Origin. These solutions securely aggregate liquidity and native assets across Layer-1 (L1) and Layer-2 (L2) networks.

4. DA Layer

The Data Availability (DA) Layer ensures that transaction data is accessible and enables the reconstruction of rollup states if services experience interruptions. By default, zkLink Nexus and zkLink Origin use the primary chain as the DA Layer. They also support Validium, which involves an external DA solution, and zkLink plans to integrate various third-party modular DA solutions to cater to diverse developer needs.

How to Earn Rewards in the zkLink Ecosystem

ZkLink offers several opportunities for users to earn rewards, such as Nova Points, for activities that contribute to the platform’s growth.

  1. Asset Staking: One of the primary ways to earn rewards is through asset staking. By locking your crypto assets in the zkLink network, you earn Nova Points as a return. This method not only generates rewards but also helps secure and enhance the network.
  2. Contributing to TVL: Adding to the total value locked (TVL) in zkLink strengthens the network’s security and efficiency. Your contribution is rewarded with Nova Points, reflecting your role in boosting the ecosystem’s health.
  3. Engaging with DApps: Interaction with zkLink’s decentralized applications (DApps), whether through trading, lending, or other activities, can also earn you points. Increased engagement translates to more rewards.

These rewards are integral to maintaining an active and thriving zkLink community. By staking assets, contributing to TVL, and engaging with DApps, users help sustain the ecosystem and benefit from the rewards provided.
