Harari’s Latest Take on AI and Bitcoin: Creativity Unleashed

Yuval Noah Harari, the Israeli historian and philosopher known for his profound insights into the human condition, has recently shifted his perspective on two of the most influential technologies of our time. In this digital age, two concepts have emerged as popular among the masses, bitcoin, and artificial intelligence (AI).

In his recent interview, Harari, who earlier criticized Bitcoins, said it has art elements. Furthermore, he came up with new suggestions referring to AI as ‘alien intelligence’ instead of ‘artificial intelligence’, which are Harari’s words, whose opinions and ideas evolved throughout the book.

It is worth noting that Harari has shifted from criticism when he refers to Bitcoin as an art form. In his recent comments, he stressed the creative aspect of Bitcoin, primarily pointing to its incredible velocity and the imagination that it takes to make it real.

He termed the invention of Bitcoin and other digital currencies as creative, claiming that developing new things from scratch is like creating more art pieces. Explaining Bitcoin as art, Harari points out its economic potential and defines it as a cultural and, therefore, creative product.

AI: Transitioning from Artificial to Alien Intelligence

Getting back to Harari’s stance on AI, it is also worth mentioning that he has more liberal and hopeful views on its impact. He suggested redefining the abbreviation AI to mean ‘alien intelligence,’ as there is nothing artificial in intelligence. Harari also mentions creativity as being the key feature of artificial intelligence, which, if enhanced, can revolutionize many domains as we know it.

He proposed that AI has two primary benefits: creating new thoughts and solutions that are beyond human understanding but are significant in their effects and functions, similar to alien intelligence. This approach highlights the dispositional impact of AI and shows it as a decision for change agents in the future.

Harari’s recent comments are especially significant since he has previously expressed a negative attitude toward Bitcoin. In May 2024, he was skeptical about Bitcoin, calling it a currency of distrust because the whole premise of Bitcoin is based on the distrust of conventional money.

Nonetheless, Harari’s recent comments regarding the threats associated with AI are much less alarming than his prior ones. He used to express adverse outcomes that AI might manifest on humanity and global civilizations. This shift shows an increasing awareness of AI and cryptocurrencies as threats and opportunities for disruption and evolution.

It is possible to interpret Harari’s shifting stance toward Bitcoin and AI as part of a broader reappraisal of these systems, as their nature and implications are far from straightforward.
