As the battle for crypto voters intensifies, the Democratic Party has launched a new advocacy group, “Crypto for Harris,” aimed at reclaiming the digital asset enthusiast bloc from former President Donald Trump.
The group, which currently has about 50 members, includes industry participants and policy experts committed to ensuring the United States remains a leader in blockchain and cryptocurrency innovation.
Virtual Town Hall with Industry Leaders
Next week, the “Crypto for Harris” group will host a virtual town hall meeting to support the Harris campaign. The event will feature high-profile speakers such as billionaire entrepreneur and crypto advocate Mark Cuban, SkyBridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci, and several Democratic members of the House of Representatives.
The event, open to the public, will discuss ways to support Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign and promote related fundraising initiatives.
Democrats Seek to Reclaim Crypto Support
The formation of “Crypto for Harris” comes as the Democratic Party signals a pro-crypto shift. This move is seen as a strategic effort to reset relations with the cryptocurrency industry after the current administration’s tough stance on the sector. In recent weeks, Harris has sought to engage with crypto firms, including Coinbase, Circle, and Ripple, to open dialogue and address industry concerns.
Jonathan Padilla, CEO of Web3 marketing firm Snickerdoodle and one of the organizers of the group emphasized the importance of maintaining U.S. leadership in blockchain and crypto. “The United States must continue to be a leader in blockchain and crypto, and groups like Crypto for Harris are working hard to ensure the right policies and conversations take place to ensure that outcome,” Padilla said.
North Carolina Congressman Wiley Nickel, who will be speaking at the conference, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We’re not giving this issue to Trump. We want to encourage innovation and protect consumers, but allowing crypto to become a political football is only going to set the U.S. further behind.”
Harris’ Campaign Strengthens Crypto Ties
To solidify her campaign’s commitment to the cryptocurrency sector, Harris has recently added two former crypto advisers to her team: David Plouffe, who served on the Binance advisory board, and Gene Sperling, a former Ripple board member. These additions reflect Harris’ intent to position herself as a pro-innovation candidate capable of leading the U.S. into the future of digital assets.
The Democratic push comes after Donald Trump garnered significant support from crypto advocates at the Bitcoin 2024 Conference. Trump’s promises to end the “War on Crypto” and fire SEC Chair Gary Gensler have resonated with the crypto community, making it crucial for the Democrats to counter his appeal.
