- The scam uses a fake airdrop link to lure users into compromising their wallets through fraudulent connections.
- Blockchain security firm urges Decentraland users to avoid the phishing link until official confirmation of account restoration.
The blockchain security firm PeckShield recently alerted the Decentraland audience to a phishing attack against the virtual reality-focused community. The scam, an airdrop from the MANA token, occurred after the Decentraland’s official X account was hacked. PeckShield called on the users not to engage with links concerning the fake airdrop and not to connect wallets.
The initial move of the attackers in the scam was to post notice of a MANA airdrop for Decentraland’s communities at X at 01:50 UTC. They decided to pin the announcement to keep it as authentic as possible. To make the fake offer look real, they included fictional comments that stated they had been disabled due to spam and malicious links. This shows that the timing and the nature of the post were designed to compromise the followers’ ability to discern the legitimacy of the airdrop.
Scam Tactics Targeting Users’ Wallets
The posted links contain a phishing link that leads the users to a fake website where they are asked to connect their wallets to claim free tokens supposedly dropped in their accounts. While getting MANA tokens is expected, falling for the scam will only cause the user to lose money. Another technique widely used in phishing attacks still lingers: tricking people into multiple operations. This is accomplished through the con of the availability of such offers as the limited-time airdrop offer.
The last real Tweet posted on Decentraland’s X account that displayed the community’s fashion preferences was tweeted at approximately 10:00 pm UTC on September 18, and the scammers launched the rip-off shortly after that. No official message from the hacked account confirms that the problem has been sorted out.
Ongoing Phishing Attack Trends
The X account for Decentralands was recently hacked, and the occurrence is an example of constant social media attacks on cryptocurrencies and blockchain. On September 18, phishing attacks appeared in the form of multiple high-profile social media accounts of celebrities getting hacked, which underlines the significance of security measures in the field.PeckShield also said that they should be careful and avoid engaging with the Decentraland X account until more information is given regarding the account. This breach teaches all individuals who, in one way or another, use cryptocurrency to always conduct checks before participating in any airdrops and promotions.
