The 2026 World Cup is well underway, with all 48 nations having played two of their three group-stage matches. Meanwhile in the trading charts, the value of Fan Tokens™ is rising and falling based not just on what occurs on the field, but what’s happening on-chain.
As mentioned in our last SportFi update, this year’s World Cup is the first in which victories cause a percentage of national team Fan Tokens™ to be burned from treasury reserves.
From the very first game to the last, every encounter involving a Fan Token™ can have an effect on treasury holdings, with a win causing a percentage to be transparently destroyed.
With two-thirds of group-stage matches having been completed, there have already been five occasions in which Fan Tokens™ have been burned from treasury holdings. In fact, Chiliz’ WC Burn Tracker shows that 533,510 tokens have been burned, including the official digital assets of holders Argentina ($ARG) and top contender Portugal ($POR).
The final group-stage games are the last time the treasury burn rate will be 1%. Thereafter, as nations advance, the share of the treasury that will burn post-win rises: to 2% in the round-of-32, 2.5% in the round-of-16, 5% in the quarterfinals, 7.5% in the semifinals, and 10% in the final.
So, what’s been happening so far? Let’s take a closer look.

Messi Masterclasses Inspire Back-to-Back $ARG Burns
Argentina’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Algeria (June 17) caused 13,426 $ARG tokens to be destroyed, before a 2-0 win over Austria (June 22) burned another 13,292. Back-to-back 1% burns of treasury reserves can be attributed, more or less, to one man: Lionel Messi.
After all, Messi was the player who scored all five goals across the two games. If not for a missed penalty against Austria, it wouldn’t just be consecutive token burns we’re talking about; it would be successive hat-tricks for arguably the greatest player the game has ever seen.
Despite the opening group-stage win over Algeria failing to inspire a significant uptick in $ARG trade volumes or spot price, the subsequent victory over Austria had a more meaningful impact: from a value of $0.232 pre-match, $ARG climbed to $0.261 (+12.4%).
Trade volumes also rose, from $560,772 before the Austria match to 2.4M that night. As ever, big matches catalyze the interest of traders, and with wins causing token scarcity to increase, that is likely to continue throughout the tournament.
Argentina will play Jordan in their final group game on June 28, whereupon a win would trigger a further burn of 13,159 $ARG tokens. While Argentina have already qualified for the round-of-32 as Group J winners, Jordan have been eliminated after successive defeats to Austria and Algeria.
Could the prospect of another Argentina win and token burn cause $ARG to rise? Traders will be eyeing the market closely as the match approaches. Fans will certainly be hoping Messi continues his goalscoring form: the little wizard has already become the top goalscorer in World Cup history, with 18 goals eclipsing Miroslav Klose’s old record of 16.
As things stand, Argentina will face Uruguay in the round-of-32. However, that could change depending on Group H results, wherein all four teams (Uruguay, Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia) retain a chance of qualifying for the next stage.
Ronaldo Revival Helps $POR to Gains
In debates about the greatest footballer of all-time, Messi’s name is invariably mentioned alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, his old rival and counterpart from their time in La Liga with Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.
On the same day Messi ran riot with a hat-trick against Algeria, Ronaldo looked forlorn and failed to score as Portugal drew 1-1 with DR Congo. Critics sharpened their knives and accused the 41-year-old of egomania, of refusing to accept that his time at the top was over.
In typical fashion, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner made snipers eat their words in the subsequent game against Uzbekistan (June 23), scoring two in a 5-0 rout. “I’m back!” was Ronaldo’s message to the camera afterwards, as he became the first person to score in six World Cups.
More importantly for Fan Token™ traders was the burn effect caused by Portugal’s Group K win: 1% of treasury holdings were wiped out, equal to 69,656 $POR tokens. Portugal’s inspired performance also helped the token rise from a spot price of $0.189 hours before kickoff to $0.217 after full-time (+14.8%).
Trade volumes responded to Ronaldo’s revival too, blowing past $1.5M a day after the game when they had stood at less than $400k on matchday morning. Call it the CR7 effect.
As things stand, Portugal will play Ghana in the round-of-32, although depending on the result of their final group-stage game against Colombia (June 27), and outcomes elsewhere, they may play Croatia.
The latter possibility would give rise to the prospect of Ronaldo facing his old Real Madrid teammate Luka Modrić, who at 40 years old is also playing in his last World Cup. When Modrić won the Ballon d’Or in 2018, he became the first player other than Messi or Ronaldo to win the honour since 2007.
One Step Closer to $ARG vs $POR
One of the strongest narratives built into the 2026 World Cup is Messi vs Ronaldo, Argentina vs Portugal. Yes, there are other teams in contention – France, Spain, England, Brazil – but World Cup holders Argentina and 2016 European champions Portugal are two of the frontrunners.
With Messi and Ronaldo in the twilight of their illustrious careers, both will be desperate to get their hands on a World Cup. Despite scoring goals in more World Cups than anyone, Ronaldo has yet to get his hands on the trophy.
Argentina and Portugal are still on track to meet each other in the quarterfinal, with history (and 5% of Fan Token™ treasury reserves) at stake. Will Messi and Ronaldo continue scoring en route to that showdown, setting the stage for a collision for the ages? Time will tell.
Whatever happens, expect sentiment in the stands to show up on-chain as wins continue to burn a percentage of Chiliz Fan Tokens™. Who are you backing to go all the way?
