When the sun sets on Sunday evening, all bets will have settled with it. Which country boasts the greatest national football team? (Spain or Argentina.) Which continent dominates the beautiful game? (Europe or South America.) And which nation can lay claim to the finest Fan Token™ in the form of $SPAIN or $ARG?

When Chilliz kicked off their Burn to Glory campaign a little over a month ago, they could scarcely have imagined that the nations sporting two of the leading Fan Tokens™ – Spain and Argentina – would face off in the final. Call it serendipity, fate, or sheer luck, whatever way you slice it, Sunday night’s showdown is shaping up to be a humdinger for Fan Token™ holders.
While Fan Tokens™ are good for many things, from securing exclusive merch to VIP access, in their basest form, they’re a proxy for the sentiment underpinning the team whose name or acronym their ticker bears. It’s no coincidence that both $SPAIN and $ARG have soared in value following the teams’ semi-final victories against France and England respectively.
Momentum is everything, in crypto as in football, and on July 19 two seemingly unstoppable forces in Spain and Argentina will collide. Something’s got to give, both on the pitch and on the charts, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Let’s unpack the case for each side’s team and Fan Token™ emerging victorious.
The Old Guard Versus the New
There are many ways of framing Sunday’s World Cup Final, with one of the most dramatic being that of the old guard, in the form of Argentina, versus the new. Maverick; talisman; genius; whatever you wish to call him, Lionel Messi has been the fulcrum around which this Argentina side have revolved, as demonstrated on Wednesday night (July 15) when his two late assists secured semi-final victory against England.
The Spanish appear veritably youthful in comparison, and not just because Messi was once photographed bathing Spanish 19-year-old superstar Lamine Yamal – when the latter was five months old, it should be added. Barring a miracle, this will be Messi’s last World Cup.
Win or lose, the Argentine looks likeliest to take home the Golden Boot. He’s currently on eight tournament goals alongside Kylian Mbappé, who will get a chance to augment his total in the third place play-off against England on Saturday.
Exciting as the final’s battle of Youth versus Experience is for purveyors of the beautiful game, the real battle for crypto traders lies on the frontlines to which they are more accustomed. For it is in the trenches that the true conflict can be found, where the two leading Fan Tokens™ will go toe to toe.
The Tale of Two Tokens
On the surface, the rise of $ARG and $SPAIN is the tale of two Fan Tokens™, each propelled by the teams’ progress on the park. Both assets spiked dramatically following their
semifinal victories, with the former gaining 113.7% and the latter rocketing 76.2%. It’s clear that what happens on the field filters through into the trajectory of the corresponding Fan Tokens™. But it’s also clear that there are other forces at play.
Specifically, the force multiplier that is Chiliz’ Burn to Glory campaign, which sees an increasing percentage of Fan Tokens™ burned as each team progresses through the tournament. The culmination of all this token burning, with the commensurate reduction in circulating supply this entails, will be the World Cup Final, whereupon 10% of the victor’s supply will be consigned to the digital furnace.
This is gamified scarcity in action. The campaign has, by any measure, been a resounding success. Had Fan Token™ teams Argentina, Spain and – to a lesser extent – Portugal ($POR) been eliminated earlier in the competition, we might not be talking about these multi-utility tokens. But here we are, on the verge of the final, with two of the three noteworthy possessors of Fan Tokens™ poised to face off.
Whatever the outcome of Sunday’s finale (July 19), the real winner has been the traders who’ve had the conviction to hold their Fan Tokens™ through thick and thin. In the case of $ARG and $SPAIN, it’s been mostly thick, with each win resulting in an increasingly fat tranche of tokens being permanently removed from circulation.
But even taking the burn out of the equation, it’s clear that there’s been upside to holding Fan Tokens™ of the tournament’s dominant teams. Where these assets go after the World Cup remains to be seen, but given that the goodwill that accompanies raising the trophy can flow for months to come, it’s clear this story has further to run.
And it’s equally clear that come Sunday, traders will be torn between following the match and following the trajectory of their favorite Fan Token™.
